I'm an early zoomer that transitioned from VHS, to DVD and cable, to streaming throughout my life. I enjoy that sense of ownership and tactile feedback of popping in a cartridge or disk, or moving around cards and dice when playing Magic, but I have limited space and money, and I primarily game and consume media on my PC which is already primarily digital nowadays, mostly buying physical media at thrift stores and such when it's cheap.
As much as I like physical media, it's not a perfect solution to preservation and accessibility. Disc rot and failing hardware will take everything eventually, not everyone has the extra space, and buying each thing you want to watch can still be more expensive than a monthly subscription. The only way to ensure preservation is to circulate DRM free media as far and wide as possible, store it in as many places as possible, and develop emulators and other tech to replicate old functionality long after the last NES and CRT television has crapped out.

As much as some people want it to come back, it's never coming back. The average person likes convenience too much to want to deal with physical media, and rightly so. Physical media is a pain in the ass compared to streaming.

Counterpoint, what if the movie constantly buffers due to internet issues? Not everyone has quality broadband due to regulations of broadband from internet companies. Not everyone can afford major broadband services. Also, people are tired of constant ad breaks.

The bulk of my collection is Blu Ray. Some DVDs are hard to upgrade to Blu Rays due to the Blu Rays being out-of-print. Trying to upgrade "Gone in 60 Seconds" from 1974 could cost me $40. The DVD of the original cost me $20, but that's in print.

@edray1416 Not dead i got an entire backlog spanning older consoles im filling up with media aswell as a computer my videogames are doing fine, Its the new physical games you should be worried about and yeah i agree older games was betyer, Newer games just focus on woke while older focus on entertaining the customer.

Sony just announced that they will discontinue physical games beginning January 2028 for future PlayStation consoles. We really need to keep physical media alive.

@Orwellian1984 Sadly you haven't truly owned modern physical console games for years now. Most of them are useless without a day one patch from a server that could cut off access to the update at any time. This is partially why I modded my PS4. That said, outright no longer selling disks, even if they're just glorified DRM keys, kills the used market, which really sucks for gamers on a budget.

this is very true! im hoping to start burning CDs and i already have a large collection of DVDs and Blu-Ray(plus my library has a bunch of DVDs you can borrow)
@irrelev4nt Still kept the DVD burner from my old computer and put it in my current PC. I love cases with 5.25 inch bays.
