In the footsteps of Caspar David Friedrich
In the summer of 1810, Caspar David Friedrich and his artist friend Georg Friedrich Kersting went on a hike in the Giant Mountains. On the way there, on 4 July, the two climbed Mount Oybin in Upper Lusatia, southwest of Zittau, which is embedded in a picturesque landscape. On its summit plateau, they not only came across the ruins of a castle and a cemetery, but also the remains of a Cölestine monastery. The ruinous sacred building immediately captivated Friedrich. He made a watercolour pencil drawing on the spot.
