You're getting close to the truth - the Internet is hollow, if you cut the major websites that most people use daily right down the middle you'll see that there's a thin veneer of bots, alts, etc. and that 99% of the "content" comes from less than 1% of people. Lemme ask you, do you know ANYONE who watches things that are featured or trending on YT? Chances are, probably not - yet that popcorn, filler, "content" still gets millions upon millions of views. My belief? YT pumps the numbers on stuff that will never be controversial so that they can get more advertising dollars. People love filthy, disgusting, degenerate content - there's been a demand for it constantly for decades and it's always had some commercial viability - yet YT doesn't want anything to do with that stuff. Curious indeed.
