I watched this entire video while driving somewhere. Unfortunately, the people this guy is referring to do exist, and they're not hard to find. Those people stick out in your mind if you've ever had an argument with them, because they're so blinded by dogma that they will never make pragmatic decisions about software. However, those people probably aren't the ones maintaining KDE or Gnome or whatever, they're busy using tiling WMs and fighting over text editors.
The biggest failing of the hammers without handles video is it takes this group of people, takes the worst properties of all of them, mashes it into one imaginary person, and then applies that to all problems in Linux. They definitely are a problem and are hostile to people who are honestly looking for help, but they're not the ones making bad UIs because they're usually not even making GUIs to begin with.
Also, all the UI complaints the guy has in the video I actually agree with. GUIs are important to get right.

@madarao Yeah I agree with that assessment. I think he's drawing way too broad of a negative conclusion than is warranted. Most of the problems he describes are probably just the result of lack of money

@madarao I just read that blog post. The biggest takeaway I have: Gnome is the Windows 8 of Linux UI

2:42 Out of all the things when making bigger videos, the one thing I actually do prefer doing is writing the script out. Despite what my gaming videos show, I am not that good at grabbing points from my mind. The script is kind of like those little note thingies that some people use to keep track of what they are doing.
This has nothing to do with the actual video, but I just wanted to share that.

@YeOldeFellerNoob I use scripts because I forget things and also I repeat things multiple times if I don't. If I use scripts I can plan it out and say it the best way I can for viewers to understand and even better if I edit out any mistakes and stutters and pauses.

watched the end of the video now.
linux elitism is overblown issue but it still exists just in some discord servers and revolt/stoat servers and maybe a subreddit or 2.
but majority people are nice
(i was bullied once into using ubuntu in 2023 by a linux discord server from linux mint but i luckily switched to debian in august that year)
i agree some people (even me) are stupid with getting help for errors and you should be nice to the people giving help but i still think threads and servers for support need to exist since some issues are too rare to have documentation or the documentation explains it terribly.(i mean actual businesses like apple or amazon have support you can call on the phone because they know not everyones gonna look at a manual online)
i do agree with you that this guy just made a nothingburger video out of nothing.
like complaining about some apps when he could of talked to them directly to fix it or make his own competitor apps that fixed the issues.

@SkibidiCoffee i'm sure there's that one guy out there who actually thinks he's hot for using arch, but that's such an irrelevant minority that I don't really consider it worth addressing. like there will always be a jerk or two, that's how people are and that's not a linux thing. sorry about what happened to you btw
I don't have a problem with people asking for help, I just think if they ask for help they should try to find existing answers first and then be patient when others give them advice. sometimes we misunderstand things but I at least expect others to put in the same effort as whoever's helping them. this isn't really a linux thing specifically. it applies anywhere. ESR has a whole essay about it, back when people still used the internet to read.
