I think I know why there's two different walls. Let's say you have the following code.

Simple enough. But, it would get confusing after a while, as # and = blend together. YOU could use CTRL+F, but I don't think that was accounted for when this was created. So, in order to simplify things, you could use ! instead of | to help make it easier to denote elevators, like this.
