This compilation contains high-definition enhanced ports of Yakuza and Yakuza 2, which were originally released only on the PlayStation 2. Originally released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, the compilation was ported to and adjusted for Wii U controls a year later.

Yakuza is a game that contains elements of free-roaming exploration, hand-to-hand fighting, and role-playing. In the exploration mode, Kazuma explores the Kamurocho district. The player can explore the town, entering buildings, shopping, or participating in various mini-games.

Hostile yakuza will often approach Kazuma on the city streets or during the missions. Though guns can be used, majority of fights involve melee combat. Kazuma can fight bare-handed, and is able to execute a variety of moves. In addition, the player can interact with many objects seen on the battle screen and use them as weapons.

Role-playing elements are present in the game's economy and in the character growth system.
