Physical Media is not Preservation
Console gaming and years of anti-piracy sentiment has led to a rampant stockholm syndrome, where people believe physical media is immune to DRM and completely ignore copying, which is an essential survival trait that software companies have deprived them of for decades. On the other hand, online distribution of software and art is unnecessarily stereotyped because of the widespread online DRM introduced on consoles, which arrived to downloadable games first. This video is my unscripted explanation of why this line of thinking doesn't make sense.
I mispeak a few times in the video, and my mic quality is bad since I had to record it in my car. sorry about that lol.

Stopped caring (and buying) games over a decade ago, but it's funny how people just remove the hardware out of the equation altogether, only to then talk about emulation like it's a cardinal sin, when if we want to be honest the latter is the thing that matters the most, objectively speaking, when it comes to software preservation.
Consoles are just not gonna be around forever, they will be limited and discontinued, what will still be available is gonna be general purpose PC hardware. Sure, In an ideal world we'd need both Physical and Digital when it comes to preservation, but at the end of the days videogames are primarily software. They just so happen to be shipped on a physical support for console players (and more often than not in a woefully incomplete state, they also seem to forget about this!) to put on a shelf and soypog over them on reddit.

honestly i cant say i disagree with anything in this video! i quite liked it too
makes me wish we DID live in a better society where we would still actually
own our shit! as someone who neither copies my games nor collects physical
media the more i really listen to things like this the more i think i should start
doing more like that, the state of the world relating to media is just kinda
Shit right now and i mean... actually OWNING my stuff forever sounds pretty
nice to me, but hey what do i know im just a random person in a vidlii comment

watched the end of the video.
i get your point about how discs still have drm and online distribution isnt inherently bad (if they allow anyone to just download the gamefiles with no DRM or accounts to their pc)
but i think most people like the fact that if you have no internet connected to your console that the drm stuff doesnt really matter since the console company wouldnt even know you exist to brick your console or take away your game and also people just like the other reasons i mentioned before about game discs. (although companies are trying to destroy those reasons)
you are right you should backup your games and music and movies incase of disc rot.
tbh i think DRM and copyright itself is kinda silly except for trademarks and maybe patents.
if i sell you a painting it would be strange if i wrote it in the contract that you cant take a picture of the painting to post on instagram and that you cant scan it and print it out as a backup incase it gets destroyed or stolen.

10:00 people buy physical games because:
1. they dont have internet or just have bad internet that would take 1week to download a 100gb videogame.
2. people dont have credit cards to buy shit online and physical games allow you to buy in cash. (story of my family why we always bought physical games)
3. if you buy the game and it sucks you can sell the disc for 30 or 50% of the cost you paid for to atleast make some of it up.
4. you can buy it used if brand new is too expensive for you.
5. physical games you can gift to your family or friends.
6. if your console breaks you can get a new one and continue all the same games without having to rebuy your whole collection as well and also play your games at friends houses on their console.
i understand theres still drm on discs but theres many other reasons people buy discs so it makes sense people are angry that playstation announced they would end physical games in 2028
so you cant dismiss peoples concerns.

@SkibidiCoffee I didn't mention those because they weren't relevant to the discussion, I don't care how people prefer to buy games. the point is not to be elitist about one format over another

I never knew there were people who thought that copying an MP3 degraded it lol
Most of the things about physical ownership of media that would normally be true are wrong about games. Generally speaking, DVDs and CDs don't have any kind of DRM, so you don't need a specific player like games need. The way people talk about physical media isn't usually right when it comes to games specifically.
While I agree with the overall point of your video, I have to point out just how irresponsible people are with their computer data. People don't make backups, they get malware, they break their PC, etc and then their data is gone. A physical disk is often gonna be more practical for actually keeping consistent access, as long as that thing doesn't have online DRM. That said... if HDD copiers were cheaper and HDDs themselves weren't ballooning in price, things would probably be easier.
also online distribution is a better term than digital distribution, I agree

@Smargma lol
you can manually request snapshots. wayback is kind of gay though they censor the fuck out of everything, archive.is/ph is more reliable. but online services like that are only best if you're trying to prove something to others, otherwise just save the stuff to your computer

@madarao i will never forgive internet archive for blacklisting the whole vidlii website just because they dont know how safe harbor laws work. even if you see CP on a website. as long as the website owner deletes it as fast as possible. they arent legally responsible. idk how internet archive couldnt tell the difference between 8pan (the guy spamming cp to vidlii) and lolwut (owner at the time in 2024) and thought vidlii was just a giant CP ring
archive.md mogs archive.org because they didnt remove vidlii just because someone complained about cp or gore or racism in 2024
you can still see archives of 2017 vidlii on .md
