shingo (1 week ago) it makes sense that featured videos got hit the hardest, because I'll bet a lot of people who came for cartoons would only see the cartoon page and the homepage, and not bother clicking on videos from many other pages. also, it probably just shows up in google results a lot less now that cartoons are gone.

another reason VL may have nuked cartoons: they're already breaking Cloudflare ToS by serving videos through CF's CDN, and they probably wanted to avoid attracting attention to themselves.

I'm too lazy to actually go and check past videos, but I remember the top video of the day on the videos page getting around 100-150 views usually, and now it gets around 80-120 or something, so a relatively small reduction in views. the biggest thing that got affected is featured videos, which get significantly fewer views. that's actually what I noticed first, and what made me notice the connection with nuking cartoons.

shingo (1 week ago) @Flipy They probably left legitimate archives up. As far as tanking the site, I think the only real negative consequence is the perception of inactivity. Like I said, I haven't seen actual activity go down.

@madarao I'm sure they were getting DMCA notices up the ass. companies run bots that scan the internet for what they think are infringing videos and then send mass DMCA emails, so VL was definitely getting those

i'll never forget seeing "it's the end of vidlii!" spewed by people who never had any interactions of substance to begin with. gojirita for one. the guy only friend collected and had the balls to claim *right before* the rule change that what he was doing would never ever backfire on him lol

Flipy (1 week ago) @shingo the admins kets some cartoons up which is the wonder pants dubbed in spanish. im pretty sure when jan started to stop caring for this site people would upload eps of spongebob, wonder pants and anime. the spongebob archival community uploaded tv rips (tv recordings) of the show which vidlii was its home
