XFCE gone Vista. lul not bad. What theme is that? My hurdle is always finding a theme I like, only to find that it's absolutely hostile to GTK 3. (you need gt2/3 compatibility these days)

GTK+ 4.x is a testing branch. 3.26 is the latest "stable". Most developers don't follow the GNOME trends. So theme breakage with software is super rare, I haven't seen it happen once. Possibly because I use Ubuntu LTS?
Don't get too campy with XFCE. They're steadily migrating to GTK 3. Testing builds already have GTK 3 variants of the Task Manager and Thunar. But with an updated theme and the creativeness of XFCE, you'll be hard pressed to spot a difference. As was the case with MATE. Aside from the fact that... Press F to pay respects to your now defunct GTK 2 themes. :-(
It does suck for new theme artists though. You have to support GTK 2 and 3 as developers can't make their minds up on which toolkit to use :P

my desktop (peppermint os). can you distinguish the gtk 3 programs from gtk 2? https://i.imgur.com/SFJS3tH.jpg

I think that's the case
i've used arch and that may be why I ranted about it
there's an unofficial "ubuntu-gtk3" package on arch but that seems to break all gtk3 programs on my computer, since they're built against the newer gtk3
gentoo actually looks tempting at this point

yeaah, I know, heck the notifications already use gtk3
I've tried gtk3 thunar - didn't seem to get any graphical glitches which was the case with gtk2 thunar
and so is mousepad

the problem I have with some gtk3 themes is that the padding on stuff like menubars and window decorations etc. can be way more than generous
and editing the css seems weird - i'm sure it won't be once I get used to them

well.. sorta, doesn't seem to have much difference for that particular theme, appearance-wise, other than the animations and stuff
