(more info)
When I was little I just thought Dark Pokemon were evil. Taking a step backwards and analyzing the data there is actually a rather loose definition of what represents a Dark-type. Some as Scrafty or Pangoro are associated with brutal, violent, "dirty" fighters, then some, such as Umbreon and Darkrai just represent literal darkness.

A few others, such as Stunky and the Alolan form of Rattata are simply nocturnal animals. Lastly, a couple like Absol and Greninja, are even portrayed as having noble and valiant qualities. Hmm...I can't tell maybe taking a look at their strengths and weaknesses will help.

Absol is said to predict disasters and Greninja is a ninja....ninjas often worked at night in the cover of darkness....hope that explains their typing for you.
