The length of Lake Baikal is about 600 kilometers. The thickness of its ice reaches 1.5-2 meters. This ice is capable of supporting a car weighing up to 15 tons, but at times you can see cars that have fallen through. The ice has different patterns in different parts of the lake. This happens because the water freezes layer by layer. It is especially interesting to find a fish or a branch in the ice.
The depth of the lake is 1642 meters. Besides Baikal, there are only two lakes on Earth with a depth of more than 1000 meters: Tanganyika (1470 m) and the Caspian Sea (1025 m).
The ice on Lake Baikal is very transparent. You can see everything to the very bottom: fish, green stones, plants and the blue abyss. The water in the lake is so clear that some objects are visible at a depth of up to 40 meters.
