You should use a program called betacraft it fixes bugs on old minecraft like sounds and it helps with performance and has more versions like you can even play the demo version of minecraft

The whole sound driver issue happens when you go back and play the old Alpha versions of minecraft. The modern way the game is launched screws with the fact that that version is meant to be played as a Java applet alone. You probably won't get sound on any version below beta 1
