This has resulted in the birth of an entirely new medium of advertising in which companies attempt to fit in with the average social media user through sarcastic and self-referential humor. But what are the true intentions of these companies?

personally I don't make associations between the tweets and the corporations, yes it was kinda funny, made me exhale out of my nose (lets face it who actually "laughs out loud"), but it only choosing wendy's cuz I just don't like McDonald's food that much, and either way if there's a different restaurant to choose from I'm obviously going to pick the one with the best food, though I can see how for some people the funny tweets can lead to associating wendy's and other corps. with memes and funny jokes.

To be fair it's real people working to represent corporations but I feel that doesn't exactly change what you said. It's still the corporation just speaking through a real person. And that's assuming their not just bots.
